Why Does a Reel Rewind Unevenly Even When It Returns Fully?

A reel that pulls out and returns to its starting position may still feel uneven during rewind. It might speed up, slow down, hesitate or make a sudden movement near the end of travel. Full return tells you where the reel finishes; it does not tell you how smoothly it gets there.

Before assuming the power spring is the cause, observe the complete mechanism. Does the uneven movement happen at the same point on every cycle? Does it change when the hose or cable is guided by hand? Is the material winding in even layers on the drum? A guide, bearing, latch or changing load can affect the motion you see.

It also helps to separate three descriptions: the pull-out feel, the rewind feel and the final stopping position. “It rewinds poorly” combines different symptoms that may have different causes.

For a useful engineering discussion, record a short video showing one full extension and rewind cycle, including the drum and the item being retracted. Note when the uneven movement occurs and whether it is repeatable. Zongda can then review the spring as one part of the complete rewind mechanism, rather than judging it from the final position alone.

If the reel stops short instead of returning fully, read why a retractable reel may fail to rewind fully.
