Why does a retractable reel pull out normally but fail to rewind fully?

Concept illustration of a flat coil spring and a hose that stops short while rewinding into a reel.

A hose or cable reel can feel normal when pulled out yet stop short when it rewinds. It is tempting to blame the spring immediately, but the same symptom can arise from the route of the hose or cable, friction in the assembly, a change in the operating range or damage to a component. The first useful step is to describe exactly when the rewind stops.

Record the symptom along the travel

Does the reel return most of the length and leave a short section outside? Does it slow gradually, stop at the same position every time, or behave differently after repeated cycles? Record whether the reel is mounted in its normal orientation and whether the hose or cable is empty, loaded, routed through guides or rubbing against another part. A short video showing the full pull-out and return can be more informative than the phrase “weak spring.”

Check the complete reel arrangement

The rewind spring supplies rotational energy, but the finished reel also includes a drum, bearings or supports, guides, stops and the hose or cable itself. Added friction or a change in the effective winding radius can alter the behavior seen at the outlet. A locking mechanism or end stop can also change where the reel appears to stop. These possibilities should be checked in the assembled product before a replacement spring is specified.

Compare the current unit with the intended setup

If the problem appeared after a design revision, hose change or service operation, note what changed. Share the reel model or drawing, the hose or cable size and length, the working travel, the observed stopping point and any available earlier sample. If a spring is suspected, provide its drawing or sample and photographs showing how it is installed. Do not open a loaded spring housing without the appropriate service procedure.

An engineering review can then separate a spring requirement from an assembly problem and agree on a meaningful test in the complete reel. For a custom rewind project, send Zongda the assembly layout and a description of the behavior you want at both ends of travel.
