Preload and working turns in a spring-driven reel

Two numbers often appear in a spring-driven reel discussion: the spring’s preload and the reel’s working turns. They describe different parts of the mechanism’s motion. If either number is given without a reference position, two teams can believe they agree while imagining different starting conditions.

What preload describes

Preload is the spring’s installed starting condition before the reel travels through its normal operating range. It helps describe how the spring is connected to the reel at assembly. The word alone does not state the output available throughout the reel’s travel. A useful description identifies the reference position from which the installed condition is recorded.

What working turns describe

Working turns are the rotation the reel uses between its intended operating limits. For a hose, cord or cable reel, state which position represents fully returned material and which represents the maximum intended extension. If the drum, spring arbor and output do not rotate together, name the component whose turns are being counted. Do not assume that a hose length by itself defines the spring’s operating range.

Why both belong on the same assembly sketch

The assembly sketch can mark the installed position, the normal start and finish positions, the viewing direction and the relevant stops. This gives the spring manufacturer and reel designer a shared description of the motion. It also helps them identify whether a measurement or a sample test was taken at a position that matters in service.

Preload and working turns are inputs to a project-specific review, not a shortcut for choosing a spring. The final arrangement depends on the actual reel, load, installation space and required behavior. When requesting a custom spring, send the complete assembly drawing or a marked sketch together with the intended travel and acceptance requirements.
