Defining spring retraction for a car-wash hose reel
A car-wash hose reel must let an operator pull out the required length while returning the hose without excessive force or an uncontrolled finish. Spring selection therefore starts with the reel system, not with a strip dimension copied from another product.
Map the actual operating travel
Record the usable hose length, drum dimensions, number of reel turns and the positions of any stops or locking mechanism. As hose moves between the drum and the working area, the load seen by the reel can change. A single torque target does not describe that entire range.
Consider the hose and installation
Hose diameter, mass, stiffness, routing and any guides affect the force needed for retraction. The reel’s bearings and internal friction matter as well. The spring must also fit the available housing and connect reliably to the shaft and drum.
Test the complete behavior
A useful sample evaluation checks several positions: initial pull-out, normal extension, release or unlocking, and the final part of rewind. The operator should be able to extend the hose as intended, while the reel returns it under controlled conditions. Any applicable service environment and maintenance expectations should be included in the test plan.
This is a design checklist, not a claim about a particular customer project. For a technical review, send the reel drawing or sample, hose specification, travel range and a description of the desired pull-out and return behavior.
